Deep in the Arctic Circle in Greenland is America's lone and most potential air base.
More than 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Thule Air Force Base is strategically located between Moscow and New York City and was designated a potential anti-Soviet area during the Cold War.
Today, the base is commonly used to monitor allies of the Arctic and is home to about 400 Danes, 50 Greenlanders, three Canadians and 140 U.S. troops and aides.

Thule's remote location makes serving on the ground a very different experience than anything else in the U.S. military. The Air Force Orientation Guide to Thule explains that outside the base, there is nothing for miles, just empty snowy plains in the most populous northern part of the world.
