Deep in the Arctic Circle in Greenland is America's lone and most potential air base.

More than 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Thule Air Force Base is strategically located between Moscow and New York City and was designated a potential anti-Soviet area during the Cold War.

Today, the base is commonly used to monitor allies of the Arctic and is home to about 400 Danes, 50 Greenlanders, three Canadians and 140 U.S. troops and aides.

Thule's remote location makes serving on the ground a very different experience than anything else in the U.S. military. The Air Force Orientation Guide to Thule explains that outside the base, there is nothing for miles, just empty snowy plains in the most populous northern part of the world.

The guide says, "There is no 'local city'." The nearest village of Inuit (Native Eskimo) is Qaanaaq, 65 miles away. There is no "base" other than valleys, glaciers and rocks and / or thousands of miles of ice.

Thule is covered with snow for nine months of the year. During the summer, Canadian ice breakers quickly cleared the base port for a rapid supply of food, fuel, construction materials and goods before the coast freezes again in mid-October.

During the few months of the year when snow does not fall on Thule, the surrounding tundra comes alive with blood-sucking insects (probably most).

"Mosquitoes will also come out in the summer," the guide warned. "Locals call them the 'Greenlandic Air Force.'

Due to limited space and the importance of knowing everyone’s location in a dangerous Arctic environment and disturbing all staff, regardless of status, live in a dormitory in Thule. Fortunately for soldiers serving in some of the most remote locations in the world, internet is provided in every room.

Thule is too far away to be the target of normal enemy attacks, but it faces a serious problem every day: the weather. It is not uncommon for bases to be devastated by massive snowstorms that delay operations and trap staff in their dormitories.

"It's really the only base," one pilot posted on Thule said on Reddit under silverhawk7 arm. He explained that the duration of each day was also different from other places under the American flag:

The sun will finally rise in late October and will not rise again in the southern mountains until the end of February. You may get a month of sunrise and sunset until the sun goes down and you enter the light season where the sun circles the sky. In the dark, SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is one thing ... they have UV light in most offices and try to compensate for it.

The Air Force is aware of the challenge of serving at a base more than 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle and is working hard to meet the needs of the small number of personnel it sends.

"If you go into gaming, the community center has a game room with multiple web consoles," SilverHawk7 said. For playing. "They bring free pizza from the club and usually play until midnight."

Not that there is much to do - additional entertainment opportunities on the ground include bowling centers, gyms, activity centers and combined clubs that host events ranging from Halloween parties to Viking events.

Again, no city was out of base for the next 65 miles of snow. There is more to do than the stars: Welcome guides advertise more activities, including the Thule Marathon, guided tours of the surrounding area, and summer shooting locations. In 1951, geologist and cultural expert Jean Malaria of France and Inuit explorer and his friend Kutikitsok became the first people to reach the North Pole by dog cart. This achievement, among other things, will strengthen Malary's legacy, but when he returns, another discovery is made. Unbeknownst to Malari, a military organization was secretly built and he would accidentally find it when he returned. Thule Air Force Base was used to defend the world but was not found.

Finding a military secret organization is crazy enough, but our story begins a few years before Malary and Kutkisok discover a hidden military secret. During World War II, Germany was locked in Europe (including various war crimes). This area included the Danish occupation in 1940.

Henrik Kaufmann, the Danish ambassador to the United States, saw the problem and realized that the Danish colony on Greenland had no means of defense against aggression. Kaufman would give some of Greenland to the United States in exchange for protection from German forces in the region.

Anything can end, but sacrificing the territory of our country is usually an insult and this is no exception. The Danish government condemned the treaty and described Kaufmann as a high-level traitor and had been removed from office.

He knew that the Danish government could not do anything to protect civilians, and despite being ousted, he knew he had the support of the people of Greenland, so he dropped it twice and told the United States to go. Face. He then asked other ambassadors to agree with him to be removed from office.

It's short, it works! America gained his support, Greenland gained his protection, and Kaufmann was seen as a hero throughout Denmark after the end of World War II. Construction of the first military establishment began in 1941.

The deal was originally intended to keep US troops in Greenland "as long as there is an agreement" that North America is a threat. However, when the two ruling parties fell, things started to get a little uncomfortable. System.

Hiding U.s. Nuclear Missiles In Arctic Ice? Not So Fast

Many different opinions were considered, and even attempts were made to withdraw US troops from Greenland, but the base remained the same. In addition to the military aspect of the site, Thule Air Base weather monitoring capabilities have also been strengthened, along with support for air travel, re-supply efforts, search and rescue missions and more.

When Denmark joins the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), it will withdraw its US troops. The Korean War and the Cold War escalated the urgency of having a global base that the United States felt was part of helping to modernize Thule Air Base, an elite air base overseas.

It also means building a strong military establishment. Between 1951 and 1953. Malari and Kutikitsok made seven days of discovery in the project when about 12,000 workers and millions of tons of supplies were shipped to Greenland.
